How to get started!
Australia's Walk & Jog Challenge
12 to 26 May 2026
Dementia is now the leading cause of death in Australia.
With prevalence expected to rise, we need to know more about dementia’s causes, how to slow it and potentially, one day, stop it. We believe this can be done, and you can help!
Funds raised through Australia's Walk & Jog Challenge fuel dementia researchers at all stages of their career. While government grants sustain established research projects, your donations power bold new directions, giving early-career researchers the chance to pursue visionary ideas that could become the breakthroughs of tomorrow.
As a community, we’re passionate about remaining positive and embracing what’s possible. We believe in human ingenuity, thrive on challenge and firmly believe that science holds the key to ending dementia.
Participation in the event is free, with flexibility to complete the 43km challenge over one or multiple days, from May 12 to 26. It’s all about taking the challenge and doing it your way, wherever you are – raising awareness and funds for dementia research, with us cheering you on!
Where your funds go
- Understanding causes - Anyone can get dementia, even children. There is still much to discover about the various causes of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease - the most prevalent form.
- Improving diagnosis - Enhanced diagnostic methods are crucial. There is no single test that can definitively diagnose dementia, and some forms can only be diagnosed after death.
- Enhancing care - Research into quality dementia care and support for caregivers provides valuable insights to improve the lives of those affected, and their families and carers.
- Advancing treatments and cures - While current medications may alleviate some symptoms, they do not stop the disease's progression. Further research is essential.
- Risk Reduction and Prevention - Evidence shows that 45 per cent of dementia cases can be avoided. Lifestyle changes can reduce dementia risk, but more research is needed to understand the interplay between lifestyle and genetic factors.
